Compatibility Mode For Windows Xp And Vista

Compatibility Mode is a utility that is built into Windows which is designed to enable you to run software that was created before these latest operating systems. Compatibility Mode allows you to "trick" your computer into thinking it is running an older operating system. This change only affects how the computer interacts with the particular program you are using it on.

Windows XP Users:

To change your PC's compatibility to software made for an earlier version of Windows:

  1. Click on the Start menu
  2. Go to Programs to locate the icon for the program you are trying to run.
  3. Right-click on the program icon, then select "Properties."
  4. Click the Compatibility tab.
  5. Click Run this program in Compatibility Mode, and then click one of the following:
    • Windows 95
    • Windows 98 (This is often a good choice.)
    • Windows NT 4
    • Windows 2000
  6. If an error message has suggested changing the display properties, do so under Display Settings. (It is possible that you may resolve this problem simply by choosing "Disable Visual Themes" here.)
  7. Click "Apply," then "OK."
  8. Start the program.

Note:The Program Compatibility tab is only available for programs that are installed on your hard disk. Although you can run the Program Compatibility Wizard on programs or on setup files on a CD-ROM or on a floppy disk, your changes will not remain in effect after you close the program.

Windows VISTA Users:

  1. After installing the program, click on Start in the Windows taskbar, and go to All Programs.
  2. Locate the program folder, and then locate the program's application icon that launches the program.
  3. Right-click on the application icon then left-click on "Properties."
  4. Click the Compatibility tab.
  5. Check "Run this program in Compatibility Mode for" and then select one of the following (Windows XP recommended):
    • Windows 95
    • Windows 98
    • Windows NT 4
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
    • Windows Server 2003 (Service Pack 1)
  6. If an error message has suggested changing the display properties, do so under Display Settings.
  7. Click "Apply," then "OK."
  8. Start the program.

Note: The Program Compatibility tab is only available for programs that are installed on your hard disk. Although you can run the Program Compatibility Wizard on programs or on setup files on a CD-ROM or on a floppy disk, your changes will not remain in effect after you close the program.
